In Iceland things are sometimes hard for newly graduates. Finding work in your field of study, study you’ve spent three or four years on to get an honorable degree, is often difficult. Companies are drawing back and often timid to hire fresh blood, sort of speak.

However I consider myself lucky to get a job at a graphic design/advertising studio in Reykjavík. Granted, it is only 50% work, I only work half the day, the studio can’t afford hiring me full time. Which is okay and understandable because the company is tiny, with a total of 2 and a half employees (I’m that one half

And I am getting real projects too, layout projects, print ads, company identity and bunch of fun and challenging stuff. The studio is Plánetan (translates as “The Planet”) and they have done bunch of great stuff, for example for the Blue Lagoon and Iceland University. They’ve also done some charity work for some women’s rights organizations.

They’ve already made it clear that I won’t be crazy rich after the summer, well at least not rich with money. But experience…..well that’s real fortune.

But that’s not the end of it, because I was so fortunate to land another half-job for a small grassroot company called Locatify (when this is written their site is under construction) which produces smart phone apps, such as guided tours around Reykjavík and Iceland, and even Norway and Germany too. I have been hired to draw the icons put on the maps to indicate places of interest.

Needless to say, my summer will be very busy, which I guess….is the way I want it. I’ve spent a summer before doing practically nothing and I didn’t like it.

So here’s to good fortunes and a great summer. Skál.

Today, March 24th, marks the beginning of ‘Hönnunarmars’ – Design March in Reykjavík. A project which started in March 2009, in result of the Icelandic financial crash, and is now one of the annual main design events in Iceland. It runs from thursday to sunday, the last weekend in March and it has grown considerably since it’s debut. All over the city there are events, panel discussions, lectures, gallery exhibitions, and other things related to design, be it product, fashion, graphic or architectural design. Publishing of books, awards and new products is one of the main thing at Design March and it’s purpose is to introduce new and upcoming designers and introduce design as a realistic way of national industry.

Happy Design March everybody.

It is finally out! Mæna! A magazine about graphic design in Iceland, made by the Iceland Academy of the Arts’ Visual Communication graduation class of 2011.

This years issue is about women and graphic design, where professionals from various places in society, designers, ethologists, people in marketing and in media, share their views of the industry regarding women, be it female designers, women in advertising, formation of the sexes in society, the objectification of women and womanification of objects…..

There are also very interesting interviews with former and currently working female graphic designers, and also interviews with couples where both parties are graphic designers.

The graduation class of 2011 also organized a couple of surveys where women designers are asked about their job, how many work for major design firms etc. The results are quite interesting.

And then there is of course a saucy love story about love and loss in the Graphic Design Firm.

We hope this issue will raise some thoughts and discussions about the subject – women and graphic design.

Take a look at a few pages:

Hey y’all. The first issue of Hugmynd Online Design Magazine is out and by all means check it out.

Just click here (Note that it is in Danish)

An online magazine like this gives the form a whole new meaning whereas it becomes interactive and not only can one read articles but video files are embedded so interviews and other promotion stuffs become so much more interesting and fun. I guess this is the future with things like iPads and Amazon Kindles everywhere so why not make a magazine you can download and keep almost as many as you want, where they won’t take up space in your living room or end up in the garbage.

Save the trees (?)

On a side note, check out the illustrations made by yours truly on pages 6-9.

For all the Danish speaking out there, here is a very interesting site about everything design related. Yebb, e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g.

The entries are really interesting, where they feature designers, movie makers, architects and all kinds of inspiring people working in the idea industry, if it can be called that.

The site’s supervisors are very dedicated and the site is updated every single day. It’s in beta-mode but improvements are happening fast and an online magazine with the same name is underway. (Look out for illustrations by yours truly in the first issue when it arrives.)

So what are you waiting for?

Speak Danish? Go check it out HERE.

Don’t speak Danish? Check it out anyway (Chrome users, you should know about a very neat feature where Chrome offers to translate the page)

Enjoy.

Occasionally, when I feel like indulging myself by spending money, I buy an (not so cheap) issue of ImagineFX, THE digital art magazine out there.

What a glorious fountain of information and techniques, workshops, Q&As, interviews and a bunch of stunning and inspiring stuff for the computer artist. The best thing is that with every issue there comes a DVD packed with the content of the magazine, video workshops, sensational wallpapers, lessons and last but not least, demos of the latest computer painting programs, like Photoshop, Painter and more.

A life saver for someone like me, i’d subscribe if I could afford it but the homepage will have to do for the time being.

A must for any digital painter :
